Innovating for a Sustainable Blue Economy with DigiFish & BlueBOT

About The Programmes

The Caribbean is embracing cutting-edge technology to balance economic growth with sustainability, and two groundbreaking initiatives—DigiFish and BlueBOT—are leading the way. Supported by Compete Caribbean, these projects are redefining how marine industries operate, using machine learning, digital tracking, and immersive experiences to foster conservation and economic opportunity.

DigiFish: Transforming Fisheries with Digital Traceability
The DigiFish Project is a collaboration between Barbadian fisheries experts, Costa Rican tech firms, and the Barbados Fisheries Division, aimed at embedding traceability into the seafood supply chain. By digitally tracking fish from catch to consumer, DigiFish is ensuring:
✅ Sustainable Fishing – Preventing overfishing and protecting marine biodiversity.
✅ Market Compliance – Helping fishers meet global seafood regulations (ICCAT, FISMA) to access high-value export markets.

This initiative is positioning Barbados as a leader in sustainable fisheries, serving as a replicable model for the wider Caribbean.

BlueBOT: Redefining Ocean Intelligence & Tourism
Founded by S. Antonio Hollingsworth, BlueBOT merges machine learning, virtual reality (VR), and underwater robotics to create immersive ocean experiences. From biodiversity mapping and reef monitoring to virtual diving, BlueBOT enables:
🌊 Marine Research & Conservation – Using AI to analyze reef health and predict biodiversity trends.
🎥 Virtual & Augmented Tourism – Providing accessible ocean experiences for people with disabilities or fear of water.
⛵ Eco-Conscious Blue Tourism – Blending real-world diving with VR to create immersive, sustainable ocean safaris.

With a strategic design-led approach, BlueBOT is evolving into a scalable, future-proofed blue tourism product, ensuring economic viability while protecting marine ecosystems.

Why These Innovations Matter
Both DigiFish and BlueBOT highlight the role of technology in sustainable development by:
🔹 Empowering Local Economies – Integrating digital solutions into traditional industries.
🔹 Strengthening Climate Resilience – Protecting marine ecosystems that serve as natural climate buffers.
🔹 Driving Policy Change – Using data to influence smarter marine management decisions.

With Compete Caribbean’s backing, these projects are setting the stage for a tech-driven, sustainable blue economy—where innovation fuels both environmental stewardship and economic growth.
