WHAT IS A MEDIATHON?
You’ve heard of hack-a-thons: people gathered to create tech that tackles a specific problem, from feeding the hungry to helping travelers to making people laugh.
A MediaThon is a hack-a-thon for media makers. For a day or a weekend, participants get together to create, collaborate, and compete, making media around a specific theme. This Mediathon will be focused on creating media content around the topics of Innovation Science and Technology around the region.
The Mediathon will offer inspiring conferences by leading experts from the Region and from the world (including Massachusetts Institute of Technology), and will facilitate collaborative production of innovative media projects. The goal is to interrupt the status quo, inspire new horizons and promote media content that informs and inspires Caribbean development, while delighting the audience.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Luisa Massarani
For almost 30 years, Luisa Massarani has been working on research, teaching and practice in Public Communication of Science and Technology. Since 2003, she is the coordinator of the Latin America and the Caribbean edition at SciDev.Net, a global source of news, views and analysis about science and technology for development. She also works at the Museum of Life, a hands on science museum in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), and is the coordinator of a new master program on Science, Technology and Health Communication, hosted by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) in Rio de Janeiro. Furthermore, Luisa is the current director (2014-2017) of Red POP, the network for science and technology communication in Latin America and the Caribbean. She has had a fruitful career in terms of publications and awards received. Luisa has as background in Communication, with a master in Science Information (1998) and a PhD in Biochemistry with a focus on science education, management and dissemination (2001), both of them at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and a post-doctorate in Science and Technology Studies, at the University College London.
Luis Quevedo
Luis Quevedo is a producer, presenter and award-winning journalist. Trained as a scientist, he decided to share his passion for discovery and human progress through journalism and audiovisual production. In Spain he worked at TVE with famous journalist Eduard Punset, and was one of the creators and the presenter of Tres14, a science and technology TV series. After that, he produced the award-winning documentary “In Search of the First European”, and moved to New York to continue his career. In 2010, at NPR, he created the pioneer blog and podcast Science Friday in Spanish. Currently he directs and presents CST, a science and technology news show in Spanish, broadcasted daily to millions of people in USA and Latin America, through NTN24. Luis has been the director of the Imagine Science Films Festival, produced by Google, Nature and Science Magazine, among others. Luis is an experienced podcaster, creator of Social Gradient (a podcast for minorities at Hunter College/City University of New York) and El Metodo (his personal podcast about science, art and discovery), as well as co-founder of CUONDA (a network of independent podcasts). In the US, he has been honored as Minority Fellow of the National Association of Science Writers (NASW) and as mentor for the Mass Media Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He is also a contributor to the Spanish news outlet El Mundo.
Marta del Amo
Marta de el Amo is a scientific journalist and at Opinno serves as editor-in-Chief of the Spanihs Edition of the MIT Technology Review, the world’s oldest technology magazine. It also collaborates with specialized media in science as interesting media (Muy Interesante).Began her career in the Public Diary, worked in the Department of communication of the Council top of research scientific (CSIC) and was collaborator of several programs of scientific outreach. In 2010 she wan the contest of young environmental journalism of the agency EFE and Tetrapak. Marta graduated in environmental sciences from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (2008) and has a master’s degree in journalism and communication of science technology and the environment by the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (2009)
Javier Iglesias
Javier is the director of Opinno Mexico, the publisher of the Spanish editions and of MIT Technology Review and Harvard Business Review. In this position he helps businesses and organizations to accelerate their innovation processes and to reduce risk and uncertainty in new projects. For this purpose he applies methodologies such as Open Innovation, Intrapreneurship, Lean Startup, Design Thinking, Customer experience, etc. Before joining Opinno, he has been an entrepreneur and an international business consultant working in Ghana, Sierra Leona, USA and Spain. Javier holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Law (University of Valladolid) and a Masters in International Business by Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo.
Sonia Gill
Ms Sonia Gill is a broadcast journalist, media regulator, development practitioner and attorney at law. She is also the first woman to be appointed Secretary General of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) in its forty-six year history.
She began her career in broadcast news and production at the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in Barbados, where she won the Radio Journalist of the Year award from the Barbados Association of Journalists (BAJ).
After completing a first-class honours degree and then pursuing post-graduate studies at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Ms Gill held the post of Assistant Executive Director, and Executive Director (Ag.) of the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica for over a decade.
Ms Gill attained an honours degree in law at the University of London and qualified to practice at the Norman Manley Law School. In 2005, she was called to the Bar in Jamaica and in 2014 was enrolled to practice in Barbados.
Ms Gill spent more than five years as Assistant Resident Representative and Governance Advisor of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) office based in Jamaica, prior to taking up duties in January 2014 with the CBU at its headquarters in Barbados.
